Here we present the first glacial bedform map of Clew Bay that combines nearshore LiDAR. No wonder Grace O'Malley, the fearless sea pirate used this bay as her own. Today, many bedforms are present as islands within the bay. The map is drawn to a scale of 1:25,000 and covers an area of 32km x 17km. Clew Bay, Croagh Patrick and Clare Island is part of a mini-series of maps for County Mayo which in turn are a subset of the Adventure Series by Ordnance Survey Ireland. The biggest, Clare Island, guards the entrance to the sheltered bay and is home to 130 people. The Adventure Series is printed on both sides of water resistant paper with a 2km overlapping section. It’s probably the most beautiful bay in Ireland, and the views of it from all around Westport are spectacular. On Achill's west side lies the secluded Keem beach, a sight to behold coming down the cliff-top road.Ĭontinuing the journey from Achill to Westport you pass along Clew Bay which, according to tradition, has 365 islands – one for every day of the year. Most of my Irish ancestors came from the towns and islands around Clew Bay on the west coast of County Mayo, Ireland. Clew Bay and the islands Clew Bay has, according to tradition, 365 islands, one for every day of the year. There is particularly good panoramic view of the islands from Croagh Patrick or from Inishnakillew where the (very STEEP) road reaches the top of the. Drumlins are small but long steep sided hills which were formed under melting glacierrs at the end of the last ice age about 10,000 years ago. This coast road along the cliff edge has fantastic views of Clew Bay. The islands in Clew Bay are partly drowned drumlins. The Atlantic Dive, boasting some of the most impressive views of the Atlantic, goes along the south west coast of Achill. The island represents the west coast in miniature form: majestic mountains, clear lakes, expanses of bogs, long unspoilt sandy beaches, picturesque villages and the highest sea cliffs of Ireland. The Pirate Queen's home of Carraigahowley Castle (also know as Rockfleet Castle) and Kildavnet Castle on Achill Island are well worth exploring.Īchill Island is Ireland's largest island and it is accessible from the mainland by bridge. This section of the Wild Atlantic Way brings us through „Pirate country“ along the shores of Granuaile's or Grace O'Malley's pirate kingdom.
